 H. H. Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi is the ruler of Ajman.

History

The Al Nuaimi tribe, who migrated to the region around 1775, formed ajman. the first recognition of Ajman as an autonomous state was in 1820. the reign of the former ruler of Ajman, late Sheikh Rashid Bin Al Nuaimi lasted 53 years, from 1928 to 1981.

 

How it was named

according to uaepedia, the emirate was called ‘aeyman', a slang word for ajman. the name may be refers to oman, the neighboring region and the similarity in the topography of both areas.

Geography

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates and covers an area of 260 sq km. the emirate is located on the Arabian Gulf coast in the northern area of the UAE.

 

Nature and environment

Main regions of Ajman are:

• Al Manamah city: it is about 60km from Ajman and known for its landscapes and high mountains which are rich in magnesUMSm, chromate and rocks;
• Masfout city: 110km to the southeast and known for its agricultural activities, mountains such as dafta and leshan and wide valleys such as ghalfa.

Economy

Currently, Ajman city ranks third among the emirates in industrial development. it is known to have the largest shipyard in the country. Ajman port and Ajman free zone are two key players in the economic growth of the emirate.

According to Ajman annual economic report 2013, its gdp increased at an annual average rate of 4 per cent during the period of 2010-2012 .the manufacturing sector is a key contributor and amounts to 37 per cent of the value of gdp in 2012.

The census book ‘Ajman in figures 2011' issued by the secretariat general of the executive council of the emirate of Ajman estimated the population at about 262,186.
