H. H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi is the Ruler of Sharjah.

 

History

 

Sharjah's history dates back to 6000 years, when people engaged in trade and pearling.

The Al Qawasim tribe has been ruling Sharjah since 1760.

 
 

 

How it was named

 

It is believed Sharjah was first named ‘Sarkwa'. Current name refers to shining sun in Arabic language.

 

Geography

 

Sharjah is lies on the West coast of the UAE. It shares its southern borders with Dubai. It overlooks the coastline on the Arabian Gulf from the West and the Gulf of Oman from the East. It is the third largest emirate with an area of 2650 sq. km.

 

Nature and environment

 

The emirate has large desert regions, with some agricultural areas. Its islands include Sir Bu Nuair and Abu Musa. With beaches, marshes and acacia forests, Sharjah is home to the largest number of natural reserves in the UAE.

 

Economy

 

Sharjah has a diversified economy. Key contributors are gas, tourism, education, healthcare and logistics.

GDP reached around 113.89 Billion AED as of 2014.

Sharjah is known for its various touristic sites, which include historical areas like Heart of Sharjah and modern sites like Al Qasba centre and Al Majaz waterfront.
