H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

History

Dubai was established in 1833, when some 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, led by the Maktoum family, settled by the Dubai creek.
 

How it was named

 
It is said that the name came from a word meaning money; as people coming to Dubai were believed to have money because of the prosperity the city enjoyed.
 

 

Geography 

 
Dubai is located on the Eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, in the Southwest corner of the Arabian Gulf. The Hatta region, which is part of Dubai, shares borders with Sultanate of Oman.

Dubai is the second largest emirate with an area of 3,885 sq km.

 
 

 

Nature and environment

 

Dubai's environment is similar to that of the rest of the UAE and the Arabian Gulf. It is known for desert climate, especially in the interior and Western regions.

It is characterized by the historic creek, which divides Dubai city into Deira and Bur Dubai areas.

 

 

Economy
 
Dubai's economy relies on trade, services and finance sectors. The GDP reached around 338 billion AED as of 2014.
 

Major landmarks

Landmarks in Dubai include historic and modern structures; some of which are Dubai Museum, Hatta Heritage Village, Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and the pristine beaches.
